The Asbestos Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) require that all asbestos containing material be identified.
Asbestos containing materials in buildings may present serious health effects to occupants, maintenance staff and contractors. The identification of asbestos containing materials may often be difficult due to the wide range of products that were used in the past. The correct identification of asbestos containing materials is essential in order to safeguard the health of potentially exposed persons and to avoid unnecessary costs.
Ergosaf provides a service that allows clients to collect samples of any material that is expected to contain asbestos and submit it for analysis. Clients can have certainty with regards to the nature of suspect asbestos containing material in as short as 24 hours.
The analysis of bulk samples is conducted in accordance with Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) using MDHS 77, Asbestos in Bulk Materials, of the Health and Safety Executive, United Kingdom.
Asbestos fibres are identified by a combination of morphology, colour, refractive index, extinction, sign of elongation, birefringence and dispersion staining colours.
